Alpha Banner Alpha Meal

The Alpha Course
A chance to explore issues and ask honest questions about faith, God and the meaning of life, whilst sharing a good meal.  An Alpha course runs for one evening a week over 8 weeks, people meet together for a good meal and then listen and discuss a specific topic related to the Christian faith. The first week we always do an introductory meal, where we talk about the Alpha course and explain what it is, you can then decide if you want to carry on with it for the full 8-week course.

Who is it for?
Alpha is for anyone.  Everyone is welcome on an Alpha course and people attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life, others want to explore a faith in Jesus.

When and where?

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does the evening consist of?
We begin by eating a meal together. It is very relaxed and offers you the chance to get to know others. We then watch a DVD on a specific subject related to Christianity. The topic may be ‘Who Is Jesus?’ or ‘How do I pray?’ We then split into small groups and discuss the topic.

Am I expected to know things about Christianity and religion?
Not at all. The idea of the Alpha course is that it is for everyone. It is a chance to explore the Christian faith and find out more about it. Whether you know heaps about religion or nothing at all, it makes no difference and there are no expectations on level of knowledge or education on the course.

Will people be trying to convert me to Christianity?
There will be no pressure or expectation on you to make the decision to be a Christian. The Alpha course simply provides you with the opportunity to find out more about the Christian faith. If, at the end, you want to make the decision to become a Christian we are happy to talk to you about that, but it is completely your choice.

Do I have to speak in front of a crowd?
No. The evening is very relaxed, and during the discussion time you are split into small groups. It is up to you how much you want to talk during this time. You may have lots of questions to ask, or you may just want to sit back and listen.

Can I ask any question I want?
Yes, we welcome all questions. Many of your questions about faith and Christianity will hopefully be answered through the course material, but there will be opportunities each week for you to ask questions. We cannot guarantee we will have all the answers but we will try our best to answer any question you may have.

How much does it cost?
The first, introduction meal is free. If you decide to do the whole 8 weeks we recommend a voluntary donation of £1.50 - £2.00 per evening, which contributes towards food and material costs. This is completely voluntary and should not deter you from attending if you cannot afford it.
